Lumion offers growers a sustainable alternative to chemical crop protection by using UV-C light to combat fungal diseases such as powdery mildew. Operating fully autonomously, the robot enables residue-free crop protection in strawberry, cucumber, tomato, and pepper cultivation.
Proven impact
While UV-C technology has been scientifically validated for many years, Octiva has succeeded in making it commercially viable at scale. By combining UV-C treatment with autonomous robotics, Lumion delivers precise, safe, and efficient disease control without requiring modifications to existing greenhouse infrastructure.
“This nomination confirms that sustainable innovation only creates real value when it can be practically implemented by growers,” says Tom Coen, CEO of Octiva. “With Lumion, we help growers worldwide reduce their dependence on chemical crop protection products without compromising productivity or profitability.”

From Innovation to New Industry Standard
Today, Lumion is deployed at more than 70 growers worldwide, with over 100 robots operating in commercial production environments. As a result, the technology has evolved from an innovative concept into a proven solution within modern Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies.
To quantify its impact, Octiva has calculated that Lumion can reduce manual labor requirements by up to 85–90% compared to traditional spraying methods. Water consumption for mildew control can be reduced by up to 100%, while CO₂ emissions are significantly lowered through the elimination of chemical inputs, packaging, and transportation. Most importantly, residue-free crop protection helps growers comply with increasingly stringent regulations and sustainability targets.
In addition, Lumion complies with the European Machinery Directive as a fully autonomous UV-C robot, ensuring safe and legal operation in professional greenhouse environments.
On display at GreenTech Amsterdam 2026
The winner of the GreenTech Impact Award will be announced on 9 June 2026 during GreenTech Amsterdam. On 11 June 2026, the winners will have the opportunity to present their innovations to the international horticulture industry. Throughout the exhibition, visitors can discover Lumion in the Innovation & Insight Zone in Hall 5, Stand 05.525, as well as at the Octiva booth (01.235).
